Middle Red River, May 2009
Early May bode ill for the planned Middle Red River cruise. The first week saw torrential rains that inundated parts of eastern KY and sent all kinds of water downstream. In fact, a Mother's Day drive-by/scouting trip thru the Gorge saw high, muddy water and fast flow. Not conditions that looked favorable for a "relaxing" float on this section of water.
But, as fate would have it, the waters receded (still a bit muddy) and the local outfitter had favorable reports on the river, so the trip was on.

13 people (in 12 boats) saw fit to attend as we met at Red River Outfitters at noon for the trip. I'm sure he was surprised at the turnout, as we taxed his boat trailer with 'yaks and had to self shuttle some of our paddlers who didn't fit in the van. However, we all made it to put-in and off we went.
The level this day was high for the Red, though less than 10% of the previous weekend's flow (as reported on the Clay City gauge of the usgs). The muddy conditions continued causing one trip participant - it may have been the leader - to comment about the potential for "bathtub rings" on the outside of our boats. Still, a pleasant level that moved our boats quickly, but still safely, down the river.

Obstacles that were seen from the road as potential hurdles turned out to be barely noticeable from river level. Nothing obstructed our passage, and the few strainers/trees that were in the river still allowed for safe passage around. That, and the skill levels of the participants, made for a safe trip with nary a close call.
This time of year is budding season so we saw a mix of green with the scenery thru those tres that were still bare. The temperature of the day kept many casual users from the banks, making this a quiet trip, though water play spots looked great had the day warmed up any. Except for a goose family (about 8 goslings) we noticed very little other wildlife - just an occasional songbird or two.

As I said, the flow moved us quickly - just 3 hours from start to finish with a lunch stop. No swimmers, no close calls. Just Red River Gorge scenery, the water and us. A short but pleasant paddle for the hardy souls who attended.
